During my career as a consultant and nearly quarter century with Linn County Anesthesiologists, PC, I led the following projects:
- Coached and supported the leadership of a smaller anesthesia group resulting in a significant increase in financial support from a national-brand hospital. Created manpower models, developed financial proformas, analyzed call and room utilization, and challenged benchmarks and surveys to arrive at FMV ranges that supported the practice's needs.
- Served as interim CEO and CFO for a mid-sized independent orthopedic group. Seamlessly joined the practice and managed their operations. Identified risks, recommended and implemented mitigating resolutions. Improved morale and instituted policies to reward and retain valued personnel. Oversaw opening of new clinic location, restructuring of financing, assessment of security issues and development of coherent financials. Smoothly transitioned position to permanent CEO. Continuing to provide financial assistance, perspective and guidance.
- Provided financial and human resources expertise to a fully independent primary care, imaging and lab facility opening in a rural community.
- Helped a dental practice recruit and train a new practice administrator. Also evaluated their compliance and HIPAA exposures and provided solutions.
- Assisted an academic institution with billing compliance risk evaluations and insurance negotiations.
- Concurrently negotiated unprecedented exclusive anesthesia service agreements with two competing hospitals, including stipend support.
- Created and maintained positive relationships with major insurance carriers that resulted in negotiating best-in-class physician fee schedules and language terms.
- Analyzed, redesigned and implemented case-level scheduling, surgical block scheduling and physician manpower efforts to optimize operating room utilization, provider utilization and physician satisfaction.
- Pioneered and implemented physician evaluations and peer review processes for both clinical and behavioral evaluation.
- Implemented and oversaw billing/revenue cycle management operations for the practice resulting in efficient, effective collections. Repeatedly recognized by MGMA as a Superior performing practice.
- Developed physician compensation programs and employment agreements for production-based partner anesthesiologists in addition to newly-hired (buying-in), part-time, no-call and pre-retirement physician positions. Directed all non-clinical human resource activities associated with physician employment.
- Hired, trained, managed and oversaw scheduling, billing, quality reporting and administrative support personnel for approximately 45 physicians. Inspired loyalty and productivity among coworkers and staff through strong interpersonal bonds, positive work environment and fair benefit design. Handled all HR issues and responsibilities and created a coveted work environment resulting in negligable turn-over and exceptional, cost-effective support to the practice
- Established a structure of interconnected business entities, along with accounting and ownership transition plans, to optimized ownership of affiliated and ancillary practice assets. These corporate structures allowed the practice to save hundreds of thousands of dollars each year in health care costs and taxes.
- Created financial models and financial statements utilizing advanced Excel features. Also developed data extracts that allowed for easily monitoring and auditing unpaid and underpaid claims.
- Designed and implemented a retiree’s health care plan allowing physicians and employees to realize early retirement goals without loss of health insurance coverage.
- Was a founding member of a local medically-focused Political Action Committee, actively lobbied at the state and federal level on health care policies and was awarded the MGMA National Legislative Liaison of the year.
- A repeat guest-speaker at national MGMA-AAA and American Society of Anesthesiologists Practice Management conferences, along with assisting with national conference planning.
